Join the 2027 “Freedom” Commemoration

Black Footprints NYC is inviting nonprofits, cultural organizations, museums, corporations, and community partners to join us in commemorating 200 years since New York’s emancipation of slavery in 1827.

As New York approaches this important bicentennial, we are encouraging organizations to recognize this milestone through representative programming, educational experiences, exhibitions, conversations, storytelling, and other opportunities that examine what emancipation meant, what followed, and how these histories continue to shape New York today.

Participation is an opportunity to help ensure that this significant chapter of New York’s history is visible, thoughtfully represented, and centered with descendant perspectives.

Organizations that join the initiative may display the 2027 Freedom Commemoration digital emblem on their website at no cost. A commemorative window decal is also available for $100 and serves as both a public symbol of participation and a fundraising contribution supporting Black Footprints NYC’s bicentennial programming and outreach.

By participating, organizations are making a commitment to help remember, recognize, and share the history of emancipation in New York—and to create space for descendant-led perspectives in how this history is explored.

This is more than a date to remember. It is a history to engage.
